Sleepless in Studio City "Happiness is..." feat. master pianist Bill Evans

DrDebzz Opening Shpiel: Is the elusive Happiness a Warm Gun as in the words of John Lennon or is it a Warm Puppy as in the words of Peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Schulz? Can you be happy alone or do you at least need a Wilson (as did Tom Hanks in Cast Away) or an invisible rabbit (as did Jimmy Stewart in Harvey)? What do you need to be happy? “If you gain something, it was there from the beginning. If you lose anything, it is hidden nearby.” (Ryokan poem)

Cure the Seasonal Lonelies by practicing the sixth language of love, i.e. sharing secret sensitivities and vulnerabilities. The greatest gift you can give yourself and others is playing the New Zoo Revue boardgame. Reference their smart thought provoking and profound questions as a starting point to connect with loved ones.

Guest Caller Gayle from Los Angeles: I’m obssessed with being invited to all the upcoming holiday parties and feel terrible when I’m not included. It must be something to do with low self esteem. How do you suggest I handle these awful feelings?

Write in question from Daniel in Omaha: My daughter is 13 and dresses provocatively with a ring in her nose, low cut shirts, and short skirts. I’m worried for her safety. I’ve told her my concerns but she thinks I’m old fashioned. I try to get close to her, but she shuns me and smirks whenever I say anything.

Hear genius Bill Evans, one of the most famous and celebrated jazz pianists of the 20th century, performing “Waltz for Debby,” with masters Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums. “Waltz for Debby” with lyrics by Gene Lees, was first recorded on Evans's 1956 album New Jazz Conceptions (without accompaniment) and on his 1961 live album Waltz for Debby. (I always thought the lyrics were dedicated to me - haha, but it turns out they were in honor of Evans’ niece, Debby Evans.)

Words to describe the genius of Bill Evans are: exquisite, enthralling, extraordinary, mesmerizing, smart, sharp, jaw dropping, flawless. His sounds will send shivers up your spine and penetrate your heart and soul on the deepest level, leaving you entranced enlightened uplifted and transformed. Miles Davis referred to Evans as having “quiet fire,” which is beautifully put. There’s not a single jazz pianist who hasn’t been influenced by Evans. He’s considered the greatest pianist who ever lived. “He plays like an angel. This must be what it sounds like in heaven.”
